Business expert: how Generation Y can add value to your business
Thursday, November 20, 2008
Companies using Gen Y staffers to manage their online presence are killing two birds with one stone, according to leading author and business expert Anastasia Goodstein.
Blogs have become a great way for companies to connect directly with customers, but blogs which are inactive or irrelevant hold little appeal to consumers. And, as anyone businessperson who posts regularly can tell you, maintaining blogs properly requires a lot of work.
Speaking on an online business TV channel, youth marketing and business expert Anastasia Goodstein claims she has the answer. Goodstein is the author of Totally Wired: What Teens & Tweens Are Really Doing Online, and founder of the YPulse youth marketing website.
On her online business TV show on yourBusinessChannel, Goodstein explains that companies need to post to their blog regularly to make the most of the opportunity to connect directly with customers. Blogs need to be fresh and relevant in order to be successful.
She cites the example of Southwest Airlines as an example of a company which successfully uses a blog to give itself a more human face. Employees of all levels participate in and contribute to the blog, Goodstein says, and that is what gives it its appeal, she says on the business TV show.
What Southwest Airlines are doing with their blog is a very smart strategy for other reasons too, according to business expert Goodstein. Bringing in younger employees to work on the company blog can be a fantastic solution to retaining new recruits.
Take Generation Y employees. Staffers in this age bracket (under 25 years of age) are very comfortable with computers, the web, and social media in general. At the same time, they are looking for a meaningful working role, and don’t want to have to wait around before they get it.
In her expert business advice, Goodstein recommends putting Generation Y to work on your company’s blog or social marketing campaign. Because they have grown up with this technology, they are naturals when it comes to using MySpace, Facebook, and other popular online social networks. “It’s definitely a great way to engage them,” says Goodstein on the business TV show.
